Here are a few tips on how to build a solid resume structure.

  1. Make a Strong Opening Statement
    Start your resume with a confident opening statement that gives recruiters an immediate idea of your background and skills. Give a brief and impactful summary of your expertise making sure it is clear that you can get the job done.
  2. Choose Relevant Information
    Writing an effective resume involves more than simply listing all job experiences, education, volunteer assignments, and skills. If it isn’t influencing the hiring manager to talk to you, then do away with it. Ensure your resume matches your skills and credentials to the specific openings the recruiter is seeking.
  3. Highlight Your Achievements/Accomplishments
    Showcase your specific accomplishments, a list of projects held successfully, how you solved a critical problem, and some appreciation certificates received rather than simply listing the responsibilities you held. Make it more tangible with concrete examples and use action verbs to describe your achievements.
  4. Make it Readable
    Your resume should be readable and printable. Use proper grammar, a readable format, wide margins, clean type, and clear headings for conciseness and clarity. Where necessary, make use of bullet points to list qualifications and accomplishments.

The Top 5 Interview Mistakes Potential Employees MakeLanding a job interview can feel like a home run. Once you’ve done that, the hard part is behind you, right? In all the ways that matter, you have now reached the point in the process that is most critical. An interview is the single most important component in determining if you will find yourself employed.

Before your interview, consider these five mistakes to avoid to help ensure you present yourself in the best light to any potential employer.

  1. Being Unprepared – A proverbial nail in the coffin of seeking employment is going to an interview having done no work to prepare for it. Being prepared can be as simple as having a friend do a mock interview with you or researching the company/position you are interviewing for, and bringing questions about that position with you.
  2. Sharing Too Much Information – There is a fine line between sharing enough information and sharing too much information to the point that your interviewers become uncomfortable or bored. You want an employer to have a sense of who you are, but not know the details of why you missed work three days last year or what illnesses your cat has.
  3. Not Being an Active Participant – Being in an interview is your only chance to let your personality and attentiveness shine. Be proactive in the conversation. Ask questions, get contact information, or find out the next steps in the process.
  4. Failing to Follow-Up – It is entirely acceptable and appropriate to follow-up with a company you interviewed with. Call and ask questions like, “Is there anything else you need from me to finish up the interview process?” This lets employers know that the position is important to you.
  5. Showing up Late – This may seem like a simple factor, but it can certainly set the tone for a potential employer’s impression of you. It is the epitome of interviewing faux pas. Plan on getting to any meeting a minimum of ten minutes early and plan for any possible traffic incidences or construction areas along your route.

Student Story: Debra Hedstrom

“This is your soon to be ex-husband,” said the voice on the other end of the phone. In that moment, Debra’s entire life came crashing down. Debra was seriously struggling emotionally, physically and financially, and she was unable to find full-time work. With no experience outside of retail, she could only find low-paying part-time work with unreliable hours. With the help of her JP Coach’s, Stephany and Cleat, hear the rest of Debra’s story and how hope changes everything.

Connecting Your Work to God’s Work

In his book Every Good Endeavor, author Timothy Keller reveals that “according to the Bible, we don’t merely need the money from work to survive; we need the work itself to survive and live fully human lives.”

We were all built for work and the dignity it gives us as human beings, but for many folks in our community, their work is frustrating and unfulfilling as they struggle to survive, with no hope for the future. A recent study by the United Way of Florida reveals that 44% of working families in Florida don’t make enough money to pay for basic monthly necessities and that many of them are qualified for public assistance. That’s why we offer the 12-week LifeWorks course at four training sites in Orange County, facilitated by teams of volunteers from our network of church and business partners; volunteers like Randy Sullins, pictured above with his two students from the Spring 2017 class:

“Volunteering as a Job’s Partnership Coach has been a truly rewarding experience.   As a Sales & Marketing veteran, the JP program has provided me with an opportunity to share my professional experiences and to help others build their career path.  The 12-week program is designed to help the students identify their career interest and to develop the necessary job skills to be successful.  The structured program provides for “one on one” Student / Coach discussions.  As a coach,  I have been able to share my professional experiences. What I soon realized was that I was also growing.  I often returned home after the weekly class INSPIRED!  Looking back on my volunteer experience my Christian faith was strengthened.  The following scripture passage best recaps my experience as a JP Coach –  “For if you give, you will get! Your gift will return to you in full and overflowing measure, pressed down, shaken together to make room for more, and running over. Whatever measure you use to give–large or small–will be used to measure what is given back to you.” Luke 6:38″

Employers Gain Valuable Talent While Giving Back with The Jobs Partnership

Employers that partner with The Jobs Partnership often say they hire people based on their character more than on their current skillset. ‘Soft skills’ such as integrity, work ethic, eagerness to grow, and ability to foster healthy relationships aren’t necessarily traits that can be taught on the job; rather they are skills a person must develop themselves. These are the qualities that many employers find lacking in today’s job candidates. Fortunately, The Jobs Partnership is addressing this so-called “employment gap” by cultivating these ‘soft skills’ while fostering a deep sense of purpose in Students that attend their innovative LifeWorks training process. This no-cost training course is available to men and women who are feeling stuck in their job, underemployed or unemployed, and it’s producing highly employable candidates who are eager to use their talents and skills in the workplace.

“When I learned about the mission and objectives of The Jobs Partnership, it really meshed with with who we are and the goals for our business,” says Jeff Alexander, President of First Class Cleaners. “The idea of a ‘hand up’ instead of a ‘hand out’ is exactly what we’re all about. One of the differences between hiring folks who have gone through the Lifeworks course versus those who haven’t, is the desire to work hard and succeed.”

As The Jobs Partnership’s Employers seek employees that will help grow their business, they turn to the Graduates of LifeWorks. These Employers have partnered with The Jobs Partnership to build up the community and in doing so, they are building up their companies as well. Working with The Jobs Partnership not only enables Employers to hire from the pool of LifeWorks Students and Graduates; it also provides an opportunity for Employers to serve as class Instructors and Coaches. This opportunity allows Students to glean directly from leaders in the workplace, so they’ll be better prepared for their career path.

“We’re looking for people who want to grow both personally and professionally,” says Tim Kuck, Vice President of Regal Marine. “We know that the only way our company grows is if people grow.”

The Jobs Partnership offers Employers access to their private Career Fair, where they can interact with LifeWorks Students, who are vetted candidates. They can also access the Orlando Job Connection, an online career site where they can search candidates and post jobs, and may also develop sponsored customized training opportunities for qualified LifeWorks Graduates to become future hires.

“The value of The Jobs Partnership is they help pre-qualify people because they’ve gone through a 12-week program that really equips them to come into our workplace,” says Tim. “So, it better equips them to have an understanding of what we might do, and helps build the discipline that places them in a better spot to integrate into our workplace.”

“We’ve received a lot of things from The Jobs Partnership,” says Jeff. “One is a lot of knowledge. We’ve dovetailed some of our core values from or through The Jobs Partnership. We’ve actually hired 5 or 6 folks who’ve gone through the [LifeWorks] program, and it’s shocking how close the values of these folks match and fit our culture. In Genesis 37 verse 9, the “a” clause says, “And he dreamed yet another dream”. I want to encourage everyone that has been on this Jobs Partnership journey with us that this is your season to dream again – and all you need to do is to come into agreement with God about His plans for your life. When you understand the story of Joseph and all that he went through, you will begin to see that the dreams were not about his current condition but were indicative of his future position.

With all the chaos that’s going on in the world and in a land where we are filled with uncertainty and darkness it’s refreshing to know that God will allow us to dream so that we might get clarity for our life’s assignment. I believe that in this season you will not only get clarity about your life’s assignment but God will begin to expose your true value. That means people are going to start seeing you not based on your zip code or your life’s past resume, but based on your gifts, talents, and all that you bring to the table.

So, my challenge to you is to DREAM AGAIN and to AGREE with God about who you are and what you can do to transform the lives of the folks that are struggling in our community – as a volunteer or an employer or a donor to help us expand the ministry.

To AGREE means this:

A – God will ACCOMPANY you on your life’s journey.

G – God will GUIDE you during the waiting period.

R – God will RELEASE you into your specific assignment.

E – God will EQUIP you for your time of appointment.

E – God will EMPOWER you to press through the CRISIS, CHAOS and CHALLENGES on the journey

IT’S TIME TO DREAM AGAIN AND THIS TIME DREAM BIG! We must dream big because there’s a BIG WORK ahead of us. We must dream big because as an organization our goal is to expand from 4 training sites to 8 training sites throughout Orange County. We must dream big because there are more Sonya’s, Stephanie’s, and William’s out there whose lives can be radically changed and impacted. As churches, volunteers, employers, and donors, we must dream big because as you participate in this BIG DREAM, you allow us to come a long side you and together we expand our reach.

This Wall Street Journal editorial was written in 1949 by the late Vermont Royster and has been published annually since.

When Saul of Tarsus set out on his journey to Damascus the whole of the known world lay in bondage. There was one state, and it was Rome. There was one master for it all, and he was Tiberius Caesar.

Everywhere there was civil order, for the arm of the Roman law was long. Everywhere there was stability, in government and in society, for the centurions saw that it was so.

But everywhere there was something else, too. There was oppression—for those who were not the friends of Tiberius Caesar. There was the tax gatherer to take the grain from the fields and the flax from the spindle to feed the legions or to fill the hungry treasury from which divine Caesar gave largess to the people. There was the impressor to find recruits for the circuses. There were executioners to quiet those whom the Emperor proscribed. What was a man for but to serve Caesar?

There was the persecution of men who dared think differently, who heard strange voices or read strange manuscripts. There was enslavement of men whose tribes came not from Rome, disdain for those who did not have the familiar visage. And most of all, there was everywhere a contempt for human life. What, to the strong, was one man more or less in a crowded world?

Then, of a sudden, there was a light in the world, and a man from Galilee saying, Render unto Caesar the things which are Caesar’s and unto God the things that are God’s.

And the voice from Galilee, which would defy Caesar, offered a new Kingdom in which each man could walk upright and bow to none but his God. Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me. And he sent this gospel of the Kingdom of Man into the uttermost ends of the earth.

So the light came into the world and the men who lived in darkness were afraid, and they tried to lower a curtain so that man would still believe salvation lay with the leaders.

But it came to pass for a while in divers places that the truth did set man free, although the men of darkness were offended and they tried to put out the light. The voice said, Haste ye. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness come upon you, for he that walketh in darkness knoweth not whither he goeth.

Along the road to Damascus the light shone brightly. But afterward Paul of Tarsus, too, was sore afraid. He feared that other Caesars, other prophets, might one day persuade men that man was nothing save a servant unto them, that men might yield up their birthright from God for pottage and walk no more in freedom.

Then might it come to pass that darkness would settle again over the lands and there would be a burning of books and men would think only of what they should eat and what they should wear, and would give heed only to new Caesars and to false prophets. Then might it come to pass that men would not look upward to see even a winter’s star in the East, and once more, there would be no light at all in the darkness.

And so Paul, the apostle of the Son of Man, spoke to his brethren, the Galatians, the words he would have us remember afterward in each of the years of his Lord:

Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ has made us free and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

William Hunter Named Employee of the Year

AIT Life Safety Christmas Party

During the company Christmas Party at the Country Club of Orlando, owners Leigh Ann and Vince Horton, awarded 2001 JP Grad William Hunter with the Employee of the Year award for AIT Life Safety. For almost six years, William has served as the Fire Sprinkler Inspector for the company, a credential he earned at Seminole State College after graduating from the Jobs Partnership.

As the 3rd recipient of the annual award, William was honored for his hard work and dedication to the company, as evidenced by the catch phrase “William never says no”. Whenever he is asked to do something on the job, he harkens back to his training at the Jobs Partnership as a source of inspiration – “I remember Pastor Robinson teaching us that your job description is the minimum requirement. If you want to progress on the job, go above and beyond the job description”.

Jobs Partnership Volunteers Discover What They Were Made For

One of the biggest questions in our lives is “What were we made for?” This is a question that Jobs Partnership Volunteers are answering, through their hands-on, personal work with individuals in our community. Volunteers are a critical part of Jobs Partnership’s mission to give chronically underemployed men and women the opportunity to achieve their full potential in the workplace and in life through an innovative training process called LifeWorks. The unique course features both practical and Biblical teaching that transforms the head and heart. Students are taught by seasoned, volunteer Instructors and are paired with volunteer Coaches who are a support to them throughout the course.

“When you get to your low, you’re low. What I was doing wasn’t working, so something had to change,” says LifeWorks Graduate Sharian McKinney. “At that point in my life, I needed all the help and tools I could get, because by myself, I couldn’t do it.” With the help of the LifeWorks Training and dedicated Volunteers, Sharian completed the course. “When I walked through Graduation I had such pride, and then thought, ‘Can I not still show up on Tuesdays and Thursdays?’”

“Each person I see make that transformation, I can feel I’ve helped in some way. It just wants to make me do more,” says Dr. Barbara McLean-Smith, referring to the personal motivation and encouragement she receives as a volunteer LifeWorks Head Coach and Instructor. “A lot of people come and have either been misguided, misinformed or miseducated as to what values in life are all about. And to be able to give that without pushing, it’s an ‘A-ha’ moment for not only the participant but the trainer, the mentor, the coach as well.”

Volunteers are truly the lifeblood of Jobs Partnership’s LifeWorks course. Through many volunteer opportunities, whether it’s coaching, assisting during an event like the Resource Fair, or one-time opportunities, talented individuals have the chance to not only give back, but to connect with and serve others in a highly personal way.

“The Jobs Partnership is one of the only organizations I know of that bring many people together, from many different backgrounds, to reach out and help somebody else,” Volunteer Team Leader Tom Lovett says. “Our Coaches, our Volunteers are not on their own when they volunteer, they always have a partner. So even if they’re new, they can partner with someone who’s been there, who has the experience to help them along the way.”

The Jobs Partnership works with all Volunteers to provide hands-on and in-depth training, ensuring they’re equipped to help the Students in the LifeWorks course. As they both go through the 12-week course, Students and Coaches form a bond. Not only do the Coaches and Instructors learn about the Students’ struggles but they also learn about their passions and what drives them. They walk alongside them and build relationships that often last longer than just the LifeWorks course.

“I grow every time I’m able to go into my tool box and take something out that they gave me. I think that just makes me grow, I can’t help it,” Sharian continues. “I never once thought of bringing God into the workplace, and now I deal with customers and problems so differently, and with a different grace…and I got that because of the tools The Jobs Partnership gave me through the LifeWorks class.”

“To those people interested at all in doing something in the community, I would say that The Jobs Partnership is the perfect organization to take a look at,” concludes Tom Lovett. “I can’t say I’ve met anyone who said they were sorry, once they got involved with Jobs Partnership, that they ever came to observe a class. In fact, most of those folks end up volunteering because they see how easy it is.”
